Take Control Of Your Karma

John Lennon once sang “Instant Karma’s gonna get you…” For years, people have said (usually when something bad happens in their lives), “Karma got me – what did I do?”

Karma gets blamed very easily for the bad things that happen in people’s lives but what about the good things? What if situations are neither good nor bad – they just are?

One of the theories of Karma is that whatever you send out (energy, thoughts, ideas, etc) comes back - if you do good deeds and think good thoughts, good will come back to you. If something bad has happened, then you think about all those things you have done to get this bad energy back. But remember, everyone sees their experiences through their own minds and their own filters so how can anything be universally known as good or bad?

For example, say Brad breaks up with Angelina. She would probably consider this breakup bad. However, what if the relationship was not a healthy relationship? What if was fraught with arguments, anxiety and all around unhappiness? At the surface to her, their relationship ending would be bad. But is it?

Let’s break down this example further. Since Brad left the relationship, he is seen as bad and Angelina is seen as good. Brad broke Angelina’s heart! He must be wrong! Does one incident make someone good or bad?

But what if Brad’s intention was to stop the hurt for both of them? His intention was to break the cycle of hurt and to move forward into a healthier relationship? Is Brad still going to receive bad karma? He is sending out pain, yes, but he is also sending out the energy that he wants more happiness for both of them.

Unraveling situations then becomes more difficult to say it is good or bad, doesn’t it?

Why not look at it as things just are they way they are? Cycles start and stop, relationships do the same, people are born and die - these are all natural cycles of life.

How we handle these cycles – that is what generates the karma. What do we take the situation presented to us?

Let’s go back to Brad and Angelina. Angelina decides that she hates Brad, she throw all his clothes out on the front lawn, writes all over the Brad’s car, calls all of Brad’s friends and tells them everything that Brad said about them and then call his job several times causing trouble. Is it excusable for Angelina to act out because she is hurt? Is that Brad’s karma to deal with her?

What if Angelina lets Brad have space to pack his things, tell their friends when they call that Brad has a new number and stops contact unless they have something that has to be worked out with the kids. Angelina handles the situation with grace and dignity and she work on healing herself. Isn’t this a more positive way to handle the situation for her sanity and growth?

Now let’s be honest, we handle situations probably somewhere in between the ranting and the saint. But knowing this, by handling things with grace, dignity, kindness, compassion, humor and love sends out much higher vibration energy to the universe than hate, rage, sadness, anger, hurt and despair. Remember, the energy that you show the universe is the energy that the universe returns to you.

You have control over your karma by your day to day actions; don’t let it have control over you.

Can I be the repairman?
Tinker with it until it's back together
or put together differently.
Does it have to be the same?
Can it be beautiful with new parts?
Can it be uplifted and shifted?

Can I be the repairman?
Find all the pieces
that are scattered around?
Take care to glue it back together,
treat it with kindness, love
and compassion as it blends as one.

Can I be the repairman?
Grab the fists of those who fight
and make them shake on it?
Stop the damage and start the healing
as the bruises fade and the
smiles illuminate the eyes.

Can I be the repairman?
No matter what hurt has comes close,
the choice to end it is here.
Carrying the burden no more,
ripping apart the messages that are
no longer of service to anyone.

Can I be the repairman?
The tools are all here,
I know how to use them.
As I repair, others do too.
Ah, it is a thing of beauty!
And we are beautiful too.

Standing in the Sun

The rain falls on me,

I feel the drops,

stinging my skin,

the wet rain reminds

me of my wet tears.

Dripping, soaking me.

Tearing me to the core,

even though soft.

The rain doesn't let up

I try to shield myself

but the umbrella

flies away like a bird,

I feel the rain again.

It isn't stopping.

It drives harder,

it pounds me until

there is not a drop of dry left.

I shiver but I then realize

I'm still standing.

The rain may be pelting me

with all it's got

but even though slippery

and driving as hard as it can,

I'm still standing.

The rain can't knock me down,

it can try to push me back,

making me fight for each step

but I do because

the rain has to eventually

let up on the fierce pelting

it gives me for a while.

It tests me, making sure

I decide to stand strong.

I can find shelter from the storm

and wait for it to ride out.

Eventually, the rain gives up

and there I am

left standing in the sun.

Just Go For It

Sometimes it takes

all the courage inside

your heart, soul

and worried mind

to just go for it.

You have to dig deep,

past all the fear, the

naysayers in your mind,

the places that warn you

and just go for it.

It may take more time

that you want it to take

but with each step

that you shakily take

you make sure to just go for it.

Watch the foundation

being built, brick by brick.

It's building high and strong.

It's happening because

you decided to just go for it.

There will be times you will

slip and fall back

don't be discouraged.

When you get up

you go for it...again.

So as each moment

that passes on this journey

makes you grateful for the experience.

Aren't you glad that

you decided to just go for it?

Look Within

There is plenty of time
that's what I think
I'll put off 'til tomorrow
what I can do today

Days and months pass
things grow and change
tomorrow is still there
today is too busy

The years, where do they go?
wow, time has flown
tomorrow holds my future
today has too many decisions

I put it off, ignore it
make it a "future task" on the task list
meanwhile, it waits for my attention
pleading for me to notice it

Is it fear, doubt,
voices from the past
that make me put it off
if only I had more time, I think

But time passes
the clock ticks loudly in my ears
Putting off today for once
because tomorrow deserve a chance
to grow and blossom into today

Ah sweetness

it comes in all shapes and sizes

in the taste of a chocolate cake

in the heart of someone who cares.

Sweetness

it doesn't have to be big and grand

small and tender will do

we can still taste it.

Sweetness

because it always hits the spot

the perfect order and serving

something that can be shared.

Sweetness

even the bitter know it's power.

It stirs the pot of happiness

grins are left behind.

Sweetness

you can share it with everyone.

There will also be enough

and plenty of leftovers.

Sweetness

for you and for me.

Try it out for size

and you'll never be hungry for more.

School Days

I am learning,
every day I go to school.
Sometimes I pass the test
with flying colors,
sometimes I fail miserably.
But I go, I know that
life will give me the lessons
I need to grow.
Even though I want to
play hooky every once in a while,
school is necessary.
The grades don’t matter,
it’s what I learn and understand.
I move through the grades,
lower levels to higher levels,
kindergarten to Ph.D level.
Wow, there is so much I know
but yet so much to learn.
I meet classmates, I learn how
to love and interact with them,
I teach them lessons too
because I am both the teacher
and the student of life.
I hear the bell, time for class!

Hope

I often wonder why things happen the way they do. Watching the news can induce depression in 30 minutes or less.

The world can be full of cruel, nasty people and events. We could sink down into the pit of despair very easily and walk around with the burden of the desperate energy of the world.

But then I think about hope. Hope for the world to change and the potential for humans to change.

A friend of mine just stepped into a new chapter of his life and it's a big one. He is going to have to rebuild from the ground up. I haven't seen him for a while so when I went to pick him up to get some lunch, I hugged him and said, "This is a new beginning." And he smiled and said "I hope so."

Hope. You know, I've heard some people say that hope can be dangerous - false optimism that will send those who have it crashing down onto their bum, feeling the sting of disappointment.

But to me, I think hope is the motivation to spur us on. Hope gives us the strength to believe that things can be different. It strengthens us on our journey, pulls us up on our bootstraps and says "Hey, it can be what you want it to be. Believe in me. Believe in the possibities."

Sure, there are times that we place false hopes in people or events but for the most part, hope is the emotion we sense will take us to next chapter, the next event. It allows us to say to ourselves that anything is possible.

With all the things in the world that touch the part of us that makes us feel not so good, holding on to hope grows the parts of us that do feel good. And then we get the chance to say, "No (emotion that bums me out), you're not going to win."

So when you're not sure how it's going to go or where you're going to go next, grab onto hope. It will pull you up higher than you imagined.

A Perfect View

You never know what's coming

based on what's left behind.

It doesn't matter what's happened

or who hasn't been kind.

You are always changing

and so does the life you lead

you're always making plans

you're always planting the seeds.

It takes time for flowers to grow,

this includes dreams and plans too.

Waiting can be hard for you

but at least to your heart you're true.

So let go of the weight of the past

it's too heavy to carry anymore

it serves nothing in the future

you have much more of life to explore.

Where you go is up to you

and how you handle it, yours too

The road ahead is clear and beautiful

because now you have a perfect view.
