With the 30th Anniversary of John Lennon’s death today and National Remembrance of Pearl Harbor Day yesterday, I thought about how as a world, we are working for peace, whether it be through song or battle.  As an honoring to all those whose ultimate goal is peace, today’s musing are John Lennon’s lyrics to “Imagine”.

While there is controversy over some of the lyrics in this song, don’t let certain lines muddle the message.  In my eyes, Lennon was saying to imagine there was no differences, there was just….us.  We didn’t let differences in any form - religions, cultures, political views, race, creed, money or anything else - stop us from living as one.

Lennon released this song in 1971 - I wonder if he realized it would still be something we are striving for today, almost 40 years later.

Are we dreamers to think the world could be peaceful?  Maybe.  But maybe dreaming will be the beginning of the realization of the world we hope to have for us and for the generations ahead.  For those who had the dream before us, let us honor them by carrying the mission of peace ahead.

Imagine

John Lennon

Imagine there’s no heaven
It’s easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today…

Imagine there’s no countries
It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace…

You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world…

You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will live as one
